From Historiography to Education: Shared Perspectives in Modern Greek and Ottoman History [HistorEdu]

This project aspires to advance formal history education in Greece by providing cohesive and reliable sets of qualitative and up-to-date historical knowledge, multimodal primary sources, and adaptive teaching methodology on one of the most critical period of the modern history of our region, starting from the establishment of the Greek state (1830) and ending with the Lausanne Treaty (1923), the diplomatic convention that has shaped in many ways the physiognomy of contemporary Greece and Turkey. In terms of historiography the core idea of the project is to co-examine the Greek and Ottoman histories in the era of modernity focusing on their convergences and divergences, as well as on their entanglements in the areas of ideology, society, economy, and art. Four general Themes have been chosen, each of which consists of four sub-themes, we call Topics. Every Theme and Topic will be comprised of an introduction and a body of annotated primary historical sources, drawn from Greek and Turkish-Ottoman archives; bibliographical and original archival research will be conducted by the expert historians of the team. Subsequently, the historiographic content will be transformed into pedagogical by the team of experts in pedagogy and history didactics. For each of the above-mentioned Themes and Topics will be created a Teaching and Learning Dossier, which will be comprised of a respective brief introduction, maps, timelines, vocabulary with historical terms, educational scenario, and methodological suggestions and tips for activities and evaluation.
