Description

The Institute of European Studies at the University of Tirana has been awarded Erasmus+ funding for the Jean Monnet Module “European Values in Language and Practice: Strengthening societal dimensions of EU integration in the Albanian context” (EUV-AL – 101322713 – GAP-101322713). EUV-AL will place strong emphasis on teaching about Albania’s communist dictatorship and critically examining its legacy, combining EU studies, linguistics and pedagogy. The module will explore how the regime used education, language and public discourse to promote ideological conformity, restrict independent thought and suppress pluralism. Understanding these mechanisms will provide a historical foundation for examining the importance of human dignity, equality, freedom of expression and democratic participation. It will connect historical knowledge with reflection on the dictatorship’s lasting effects on educational practices, public attitudes and social memory. Particular attention will be given to helping current and future teachers address this difficult past through critical analysis, open discussion and the consideration of different perspectives. By linking the study of dictatorship with contemporary educational challenges, EUV-AL aims to strengthen democratic classroom practices, promote non-discrimination and equip learners to recognize and challenge exclusionary language and hate speech. Activities will include an interdisciplinary university course, research, summer schools and an international conference. Bringing together students, future and practicing teachers, journalists and civil society representatives, the module will encourage dialogue between academic research, educational practice and public life. With its emphasis on historical awareness, critical literacy and inclusive education, EUV-AL aims to help educators connect European values with classroom practice. The project will be implemented during 2026–2029, coordinated by Professor Aljula Jubani.
