Description
The borderlands of contemporary Europe hold a unique memory culture shaped by 20th-century wars, shifting borders, and mass migrations. These regions are the focus of the In Between? summer school, organised by the European Network Remembrance and Solidarity (ENRS). This year, the programme takes place in Görlitz–Zgorzelec, a town split between Germany and Poland — a powerful symbol of European cooperation and reconciliation. We invite university students and young professionals from across the EU to explore the complex history of this borderland. Participants will take part in oral history interviews, interpret historical landscapes, and create a new episode of the In Between? podcast series, published on Spotify and Simplecast. Once a single German city, Görlitz was divided after World War II, with Zgorzelec assigned to Poland. Despite Cold War separation, today the twin towns work closely together, representing the potential of European unity. Through local stories and shared heritage, the summer school examines how memory, identity, and borders intersect. The programme begins with an online preparatory session in July 2025, offering historical and methodological background. The 10-day on-site experience includes training in oral history, podcasting, and landscape interpretation. Participants will then conduct fieldwork, record interviews, and produce a collaborative podcast under expert guidance.
