Description
Sound in the Silence is an intercultural remembrance project for secondary school students aged 16–19, organised by ENRS. Each edition brings young people together at a historically significant European site, where they collaborate with professional artists to explore the past through creative workshops in music, movement, and personal narrative. The 2026 edition takes place from 3–11 October in Gernika, Basque Country, Spain, and focuses on the 1937 bombing of the town by German and Italian forces during the Spanish Civil War — one of the most iconic attacks on civilians in 20th-century Europe. Participants will engage with the history of the civil war, the experiences of civilians, the long shadow of the Franco dictatorship, and the role of disinformation both then and now. Through working with historical sources, personal testimonies, and the physical space of the town, students are encouraged to reflect on violence, memory, and resilience. A parallel workshop programme for accompanying teachers supports professional exchange and new approaches to history education. The project is free of charge for participants.
