Description
The Seminar on "History teaching and education for democratic citizenship" held in Tbilisi, Georgia, in November 1998, brought together Council of Europe experts and Georgian participants from various educational backgrounds, including officials from the Ministry of Education, textbook authors, curriculum specialists, teacher training experts, and teachers. The seminar aimed to discuss the role of history teaching in promoting democratic citizenship in Georgian secondary schools, address the ways in which history curricula should reflect democratic values and enhance democratic stability in the region, assess the progress in developing teaching materials related to citizenship education, and review the methods for training history teachers and specialists in democratic citizenship education in Georgia. The seminar featured discussions in both Georgian and English, with interpreters facilitating communication during plenary sessions and discussion groups.
