Description
Reflecting on the etymology of certain words such as "institution", "destitution", and "restitution", Arthur Chapman applies this to discussions on historical culture, and the changing meaning behind historical events and figures, and the places and statues that represent their memory. Some figures are "instituted" by being memorialised positively through statues, and others are "destituted" by having their status revised in light of changing societal perceptions, for example the Bristol slave trader Edward Colston.
