Description

Many global tensions stem from historical disputes. The way history is taught, perceived, and politically addressed can either resolve or exacerbate these tensions. This is evident in Northeast Asia and Europe, where history is central to addressing territorial disputes, controversial commemorations, and differing interpretations. Textbooks often play a critical role in how shared history between nations is presented. To address these issues, EuroClio has partnered with the Northeast Asian History Foundation (NAHF) since 2016. They aim to foster collaboration between European and Northeast Asian experts on cross-border history education initiatives, including joint history textbooks and research. These initiatives seek to reduce historical tensions and promote mutual understanding, respect, and awareness between nations. While cross-border history education projects are growing, their authors and editors often work in isolation, facing recurring challenges and duplicating efforts. These recommendations aim to compile the experiences and ideas of professionals worldwide to guide and support future initiatives, offering solutions to common challenges. This effort was funded by NAHF, the Evens Foundation, and EuroClio.
