Neruda Archives

Description

Neruda Archives is an independent, freely accessible digital archive. The archive contains historical correspondence from 1716 to 1914, predominantly from Europe. It documents family relationships, everyday concerns, trade and contacts between people in different countries. Alongside family correspondence, it includes collections devoted to absinthe and cognac, whose documents shed light on the commercial and personal relationships of their time. The archive continues to grow. Published documents are accompanied by images of the originals, transcriptions, English translations and metadata. Some letters also include researched historical context. The main website introduces the collections and their stories, while the Omeka S research catalogue provides access to the sources themselves. The letters may be of interest for teaching because they show history from the perspective of individual people. Readers do not have to rely solely on a prepared interpretation: they can open the original document, compare it with the transcription and translation, or explore further connections themselves. This allows them to distinguish between what the surviving source actually says, what we know from other sources and what remains uncertain. Teachers, students and other interested readers can use the digitised letters for their own reading and exploration of everyday life, social, cultural and economic history.
