Description
The "Shared Histories for a Europe without Dividing Lines" project, conducted by the Council of Europe from 2010 to 2014, had three primary objectives at its core. Firstly, it aimed to promote awareness of the common historical heritage among member states, aligning with the principles outlined in the European Cultural Convention of 1954. Secondly, it sought to contribute to conflict prevention and reconciliation by fostering a deeper understanding of historical interactions and convergences among European nations. Lastly, it aimed to implement recommendations from the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers and Parliamentary Assembly concerning history education. This ambitious project brought together historians, educators, and specialists to focus on specific themes such as the impact of the Industrial Revolution, the development of education, human rights as reflected in art history, and Europe's global connections. The key output of the project was an interactive e-book designed for teacher trainers, teachers in training, practicing teachers, and students. This resource contained teaching materials, strategies, and methods aimed at enhancing awareness and understanding of shared histories within Europe. The results of this project were presented at a conference hosted at Vienna University and are summarised in this event report.
