Description
Two seminars were convened in Zagreb on January 27-28, 2004, both held at the Hotel Dubrovnik and organized in collaboration with the Council of Europe, the Ministry of Science, Education, and Sports of the Republic of Croatia, and with support from the Netherlands' Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the MATRA program. The first seminar focused on the "Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust and for the Prevention of Crimes against Humanity" and included the Awarding Ceremony of Yad Vashem Righteous among the Nations 2003. The second seminar centered on "Teaching the History of the 20th Century." These events were part of the implementation of the Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust in the Croatian school system, established in 2003, with the aim of commemorating it annually on January 27, coinciding with the Liberation Day of the Auschwitz concentration camp. Over 130 participants attended, including history teachers, supervisors, textbook authors, scholars, government representatives, and members of institutions related to Holocaust studies. The seminars were inaugurated by notable figures such as the Minister of Science, Education, and Sport, the Ambassador of the State of Israel, and the President of the Republic of Croatia. They emphasized the importance of Holocaust education, memory, and the promotion of tolerance, with a commitment to enhancing history teaching in Croatia through collaboration with the Council of Europe and other stakeholders. Alison CARDWELL, on behalf of the Council of Europe, highlighted the significance of these seminars in fostering awareness and understanding of sensitive historical issues and preparing students to become responsible citizens in democratic societies.
