The seminar on teaching history in the Republic of Croatia took place at the Hotel International in Zagreb on April 4-5, 2003. It was jointly organized by the Council of Europe and the Ministry of Education and Sports of the Republic of Croatia, with assistance from the Netherlands' Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the MATRA program. The seminar drew approximately 80 participants, including history teachers, textbook authors, scholars, and government representatives. The opening session featured Ivan VAVRA, Deputy Minister of Education and Sports, along with greetings from Minister Vladimir STRUGAR, Zdravko JELENOVIĆ, the Envoy of the President of Croatia, and Alison CARDWELL, Head of the Council of Europe's History Education Section. Speakers highlighted the importance of history education in shaping young minds and expressed commitment to European unity. Alison CARDWELL introduced the Council of Europe's objectives, especially in education and history teaching reform, highlighting its involvement in projects like the publication of a booklet on "Multiperspectivity in History Teaching" and the initiation of a new project on the European dimension in history teaching, while also expressing hope for continued Croatian cooperation in Council of Europe projects.
