RESOLUTION (65) 17 - CREATION OF NATIONAL INFORMATION AND DOCUMENTATION CENTRES FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY TEXTBOOKS

Description

(Adopted by the Ministers' Deputies on 25th September 1965) Full text of the Resolution: The Committee of Ministers, Taking into consideration the work of the Council of Europe Conferences on the revision of geography textbooks; Having regard to the Recommendation on this subject transmitted to it by the Council for Cultural Co-operation; Considering the importance and value of a constant and effective improvement in school textbooks and other didactic material designed for the teaching of history and geography, Recommends that member countries should establish for the benefit of teachers national centres or other bodies to be responsible for: (i) propagation of knowledge of their country through the dissemination of brochures, carefully selected anthologies orothermaterial illustrative of national life and history; (ii) dissemination in the country of information on other countries; (iii) propagation of teaching material (films, photographs, slides, reading-lists, maps and so forth); (iv) facilitating the organisation of "refresher courses" for teachers of history and geography; (v) supply, on request, of opinions on the accuracy of information on the country to be found in textbooks; Recommends that Governments give all desirable support to existing centres in order to enable them effectively to pursue their activity to the full.
