Description
Last year, students from Elementary School Vladimir Nazor in Đakovo explored the tragic life story of a boy named Ruben Frank, who was born in Đakovo and murdered in Auschwitz in 1942 at the age of 16. Under the guidance of Mira Racić and Ines Jančula, they embarked on a deeply moving historical research project. In collaboration with students from Antun Gustav Matoš School, they created a documentary about Ruben and his family. As part of their Croatian language class, they had the extraordinary opportunity to speak with Ruben's brother, Rafael Frank, who is now 88 years old and lives in Israel. Due to the ongoing war, Rafael had to flee his kibbutz and is currently staying at his son's home in Tel Aviv. Rafael generously provided the students with family photographs, documents, and letters, which offered a unique glimpse into both the tragic fate of the Frank family and everyday life in Đakovo during the 1930s. The students were particularly moved by the heartfelt letters written by Ruben and Rafael's mother, Ruža Frank, who, in a desperate attempt to save her children, entrusted them to an adoptive couple from Osijek. These letters, along with the documentary, will be showcased at an exhibition at Darda Elementary School, offering visitors a powerful insight into this poignant chapter of history
