Description
What does it take to become a sovereign state for a small and young nation? Declarations of independence are often associated with the 18th century—but how do they work in the modern world? This webinar explores Slovakia’s Declaration of Independence and the specific way sovereignty was asserted during the peaceful breakup of Czechoslovakia – and it was not the first time in history. The session offers historical context useful for teaching nationalism, national myths, state formation, and independence movements. Maja studied History and Aesthetics at Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia and has experience with both formal and informal education as well as curriculum design and teaching materials development. She is a former history teacher, oral history documentarist of the dissidents from the period of the State Socialism in Czechoslovakia and history workshop lecturer, and currently works for National Institute of Education and Youth – the agency of the Ministry of Education in Slovakia as a History and Social Studies. She also represents Slovakia in the Observatory for History Teaching in Europe by the Council of Europe and cooperates with Euroclio.
